In this thesis I have focused on the main themes of Wim Wenders, first 20 years of production in the film industry. His film production shows a gradual growth in the way he applies his main themes. This growth is parallel to the growth of my understanding of his work, which I have tried to show in the method of my analysis. Wenders regards images as a more powerful medium of communication than the spoken word. In his opinion taking pictures has a double function, two images are portrayed at the same time. It shows the object itself as well as an image of the photographer. According to Wenders every picture has the potential to develop into a story or even a film. It is his ambition in filmmaking to substitute images for speech. The gradual growth in his work shows that the narrative function of his images becomes more and more important in his films. The story that develops out of the combined images, is formed in the viewer’s mind and not predetermined by Wenders the filmmaker. The viewer interprets what the images mean to him as an individual depending on his cultural reference. This thesis is a report of the story that developed in my mind while analysing Wenders’ work. In the same way I would like you to interpret my images and develop your own story.
