Brown and black students in the Academic Development Programme (ADP) of the University of Stellenbosch form part of a minority and according to the literature constitute a high-risk group academically. To ascertain whether their emotional needs are adequately addressed so as to improve their academic adaptation and performance, 69 ADP students were compared to a randomly selected group of 174 mainstream students. The Survey of Personal Beliefs, Tennessee Self Concept Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used to measure rationality of thinking, self-concept and anxiety. ADP students scored significantly lower on self-concept (p < .05), and significantly higher on trait anxiety (p < .01) and on state anxiety (p < .05). In both groups a significant positive relationship was found between rationality of thinking and self-concept (p < .01) as well as a significant negative relationship between the aforementioned, namely rationality of thinking and self-concept, and trait anxiety (p < .01).
