The history of the Afrikaans dictionaries indicates that the focus in the past was mainly on the inclusion of words as lemmas in the macrostructure. Although the Afrikaans lexicon mainly consists out of words, there are two other types of lexical items that do occur in the lexicon as well, namely subword lexical items (e.g. affixes and stems) and multiword lexical items (e.g. idioms and expressions). This study concentrates on the inclusion and treatment of subword lexical items in standard translation dictionaries with Afrikaans and English as language pair. The two dictionaries under discussion are Groot Woordeboek/Major Dictionary (MD) and Tweetalige Woordeboek/Bilingual Dictionary (BD). Although the Reader’s Digest English-Afrikaans Dictionary/Afrikaans-Engelse Woordeboek is also an example of a standard translation dictionary, it will not be discussed in this thesis because it contains the same central text as BD. The discussion includes a critical evaluation of the inclusion and treatment of sublexical lemmas according to a present-day metalexicographical approach. Throughout this study the theoretical discussion concentrates on practical lexicography. Existing dictionary articles are thus evaluated according to theoretical principles. Firstly, a survey of the Afrikaans descriptive dictionaries is done (of which HAT plays the major role) because these dictionaries are more comprehensive in including sublexical lemmas in their macrostructure than the translator dictionaries are. Investigating the macrostructural embodiment of sublexical lemmas in BD and MD, it seems that these dictionaries include a wider variety of stems than affixes. Where affixes are included they are treated more scanty than stems are. Both MD and BD also show deficiencies concerning the microstructural treatment of sublexical lemmas. A lack of semantic information, etimology, pronunciation and grammar are all aspects that need attention. There is also a need for more comprehensive user’s instructions for the user to use the dictionary more effectively. This study is not the last word on the subject. Both dictionaries need an intensive rewriting with special attention to the inclusion and treatment of sublexical lemmas.
