Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Artificial satellites Scanning systems Remote sensing -- Equipment and supplies Imaging systems Dissertations -- Engineering Tesis (M. Ing.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1997. Remote sensing of the earth from space generates useful data that can be used in areas like agriculture, geology, hydrology, planning and many others. The great cost and risk associated with big satellites, have limited remote sensing to governmental organisations in the past. However, microsatellites give more organisations affordable access to space. SUNSAT is such a micro satellite, developed by the University of Stellenbosch. This satellite contains, amongst other instruments, a high resolution scanner. This thesis will focus on the development of the scanner. An extensive literature survey was done and was supplemented by the development of software to help specify optical, electronic and mechanical specifications. The design and improvement of the most important electronic systems are discussed. Innovative designs were done on the clock driver of the CCD sensor and the video processor. The data that is generated by the scanner will be widely useful because of its high resolution, three colour, stereo images. The scanner also has the ability to store data and to adjust it's gain.
