Sc) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1997. Motor vehicles contribute significantly to atmospheric pollution. Some species in automobile emissions, like unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide emissions, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are well known for their negative effect on atmospheric pollution. It was only realised recently that aldehydes and benzene in exhaust emissions present a significant danger. Aldehydes are responsible for certain respiratory illnesses, as well as eye irritations. Some aldehydes are even suspected carcinogens. Most aldehydes are reactive and can contribute to photochemical smog. During this study standard and modified internal combustion engines were used to study regulated and non regulated emissions from different fuel blends. The engines were chosen to be representative of the engine technology currently making up the South African vehicle fleet, therefore engines without catalytic converters and feedback control were utilised. The regulated emissions were determined by a bank of gas analysers, while aldehydes were trapped in cartridges containing acidified 2.4-dinitrophenylnydrazine. After sampling of the aldehydes. extraction was done with acetonitrile, and quantification was achieved by means of HPLC, equipped with a diode array detector. The analytical apparatus was calibrated by injecting known amounts of 2.4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives of a range of aldehydes. The effect of engine settings on the regulated and the non regulated emissions was first studied. An increase in the fuel/ air equivalence ratio was responsible for an increase in the unburned hydrocarbon emissions, a decrease in the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and a decrease in the nitrogen oxide emissions It was also responsible for an increase in the carbon monoxide emissions. Some of the aldehydes showed a very significant decrease with the increase in the fuel/ air equivalence ratio. A retardation in the ignition timing was responsible for an increase in the unburned hydrocarbon emissions and the nitrogen oxide emissions. The carbon monoxide and the aldehyde emissions showed small variations.
