J. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Education. Dept. of Curriculum Studies. Health education (Secondary) Physical education and training -- Study and teaching Dissertations -- Education Tesis (M. Ed.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1997. The importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles are not viewed as important by many youths. The relationship between physical activity and healthy lifestyles as well as the prevention of diseases is an aspect that does not get a great deal of exposure in secondary schools. The fact that Physical Education provides the ideal medium to introduce Health Education to learners is not denied by experts. but the realisation of this in practice is not visible. The new curriculum in South Africa deals with this problem by including Physical Education and Health Education as a focus in a learning area called Life Orientation. The presentation of these two fields of study must be presented in an integrated way to achieve maximum impact on learners It is also necessary to strengthen the relationship between active lifestyles and health. It will be necessary for the teacher to not only possess subject knowledge, but show curriculum skills towards micro-curricular activities that occur in schools from day to day. Knowledge regarding curriculum models and the manifestations of curricula is also necessary. The necessary knowledge regarding curricula in other countries provide a broader frame of reference for the individual teacher to assist in the creation of learning programmes of very high quality. It is very important that learning programmes be created in accordance with the guidelines set by national and local authorities. This framework serves as guideline for the creative development of learning programmes that will ensure the desired outcomes. These learning programmes must take a wide range of teaching styles as well as the needs of learners and the community into consideration. To produce such learning programmes, it will not be enough to merely possess the necessary knowledge and skills, but also a certain amount of creativity to ensure that principles such as holism, socialisation and cultural diversity get maximum exposure. The integrated presentation of Physical Education and Health Education means that principles culminating in lifelong health benefits must be secured by participation in physical activities.
