Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Education. Dept. of Educational Psychology. Education -- Management Effective teaching School management and organization Dissertations -- Education Thesis (MEd) -- Stellenbosch UNiversity, 1997. The school where job achievement and productivity enjoys priority can justly be described as an effective school. Such a school is characterised by high quality performance inputs and outputs, in other words, there is a constant strive to the maintenance of excellent teaching and learning standards. Due to the involvement of various role players in education, the quality of work performance of teachers is exposed to external, as well as internal influences. Socio‑political changes often result in a fluctuation in the quality of job achievement and productivity. These changes therefore require that work performance managers must keep the persons who do the work, focused on the goals of the organisation so that strategic goals can be realised and high levels of productivity can be achieved. The principal is the leader of the school organization and the first accountable work performance manager. He is dependant on the performance of teachers who are in their own right – due to their training – professional experts and managers in their respective subject areas and classrooms. He determines the vision and gives direction to the school. He must clearly communicate the aims and act as facilitator for the achievement of the goals. The attitudes, values and principles that he impersonalises, serve as prerequisite for the establishment of a work culture where opportunities are created for teachers to accomplish job achievements by which the school and learners are loyally served. The school organization’s biggest asset is the people who perform the work. Work performance managers must therefore have knowledge of human behaviour in the workplace. A sound knowledge of the motivation theories is necessary so that teachers as well as pupils can be motivated to be maximally productive and experience job satisfaction. A teacher who achieves success in his job and whose needs are met in the workplace, is a happy teacher and strives to attain more effective work performance. Increased job achievement and productivity in the school therefore requires effective management. This entails a restructuring of the organizational structure from a top‑down approach to a democratic and facilitative management style where the staff is involved in the decision‑making process. They must share the responsibility and should be enabled to grow and develop professionally and personally. The principal’s management style and approach must be aimed at the establishment of a culture of job achievement and productivity within the school, in other words, teachers’ professional predisposition must be broadened. To every teacher and pupil high work performance should be the priority. The principal’s work performance must reflect the high standards that are expected from teachers. By means of effective management it must ensure that time is utilized productively and that teachers are organised into synergistic teams in order to realise common goals harmoniously.
