Faculty of Education. Dept. of Curriculum Studies. Written communication -- Study and teaching Composition (Language arts) -- Study and teaching Curriculum planning -- South Africa Dissertations -- Education Thesis (MEd) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1998. The general purpose of this study is to develop through extensive literature survey a training curriculum which will enable participants to apply written correspondence in a user-friendly way. The dimensions according to which user-friendliness was measured are the following: writing style, tonality, layout and format, content, and readability. The following methods were followed in developing this training curriculum: A needs analysis was conducted based on the written communication abilities of the research group. The written communication abilities of the group were taken as the point of departure of this study. Resulting from this the tasks that the members of the research group had to perform for the completion of the written communication, as well as the target group, were analysed. This information was used to develop a training curriculum in Written Communication.A one-group pretest-posttest design was used to determine whether the training curriculum in Written Communication, taken by 33 job incumbents, contributed towards the expected results. The design allowed a single group to take the pretest after which treatment was applied. This was followed by the posttest. The outcome of this study is based on the degree of variance between the pretest and posttest results. The evaluation of the training curriculum was done according to the evaluation model of Kirkpatrick (1994) which concentrates on the levels of reaction, learning, and result. A Reaction questionnaire was used to determine the reaction of the participants after completion of the training curriculum, and a Written Communication questionnaire was used to evaluate the levels of result and learning. The most significant conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: -The reaction of the participants was significantly positive after completion of the training curriculum. -There was a significant improvement in the measured dimensions, which indicated that learning did take place. -There was significant difference between the results of the pretest and posttest which indicates that the training curriculum led to an improvement in the written communication in the organization where this study was carried out. This study revealed certain shortcomings. Recommendations are made to overcome these specific shortcomings in future research in this field. The study succeeded in developing a training curriculum which can be implemented with certainty.
