Agric.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. Fruit size is an important aspect in the economic production of stone fruit such as plums and nectarines. Large fruit realise the highest prices and contribute to good yields. Harvest date is also very important, because early in the season when demand exceeds supply, high prices are realised. Cell number and cell size are the main factors that influence fruit size. The difference in fruit size between large-fruited stone fruit cultivars and small-fruited cultivars is cell number, but in a specific tree, cell size plays the most important role. Although fruit size is a function of the genetic make-up of a specific cultivar, a number of manipulations can be done to increase cell size and thereby fruit size. Thinning and girdling are two traditional practices to increase fruit size in stone fruit. Fruit and bloom thinning are still inconclusive. Girdling can be used effectively to increase fruit size in stone fruit as well as to advance the harvest dates. Girdling, however, can have a negative long-term effect on the physical health of the tree.
