An exploratory study was undertaken to determine what influence a creative drama programme might have on the development and growth of pre-primary, cerebral palsied children. Cerebral palsy may so curtail the mobility of children that their ability to discover, experience, play and master skills is inhibited and they consequently build up backlogs in developmental areas such as physical, emotional, intellectual and social. Social groupwork, as well as creative drama, employs processes which have as their goal the gradual development and growth of the individual. The fundamental focus of this study is therefore development. A creative drama programme was collated and a group of nine pre-primary cerebral palsied pupils from Eros School, Athlone exposed to it. The study was conducted during the first term of 1997. Positive findings have emanated from the research project as both individuals and the group as a whole showed appreciable signs of growth and development after exposure to the programme. This was recorded for specific elements of groupwork and creative drama such as communication, cooperation, spontaneity, physical participation, listening and concentration, imagination and emotional involvement and response. A creative drama programme was found to be an empowering tool for enabling cerebral palsied children to make the necessary adjustments at school and in life in general.
