The research undertaken in this thesis intends putting the problems of unfulfillment, egocentricity and poor interpersonal relations encountered by the researcher in his position as principal at a secondary school under the spotlight through a process of reflection and review, hoping to find solutions which will promote school effectiveness. The notion that the principal is in the ideal position to serve as a catalyst for a chain reaction which will lead to school renewal, is put to the test in four cycles of action research. The research period stretches over one year, with each school term representing a cycle of planning, implementation, evaluation and review. The researcher implements an action plan at the start of the study. A group of twenty five teachers serve as respondents who complete anonymous questionnaires, providing feedback on the effectiveness of the principal's actions. This feedback, together with the researcher's observations is processed. The insights gained form the basis of the revised action plan on which the principal models his conduct in the next term. At the end of the research period, conclusions are drawn from the process and the extent to which it has contributed towards solving the initial problem. The interaction and reflection provide insight and enrichment across the broad education spectrum and enable the researcher to draw parallels to situations beyond the particular school.
