Communist education -- Soviet Union Education -- Soviet Union -- History -- 20th century Dissertations -- Education Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 1998 In this study, the education system at schools in the erstwhile Soviet Union during the rule of Stalin is closely examined. The examination begins with a historical image of the Soviet education system during Lenin's rule, as a prelude to its development under Stalin. Stalin's interpretation of the original Marxist doctrine is determined, as well as his contribution to its further evolution. To understand the ideological relationship and the further clarification of the subject, Marxism, Leninism and Stalinism are compared with regard to a number of key aspects. From this examination, it appears that, although Stalin presented himself as a dedicated Marxist and a loyal follower of Lenin, he deviated from them in many ways. It would also appear that the ideological changes which occurred were clearly reflected in the education system at schools in the Soviet Union. This study offers a broad overview of education at schools in the USSR under Stalin, as evidenced by certain marked tendencies. As a reaction against the experimental education of the 1920s, the tendency moved away from experimental teaching toward conventional teaching. Furthermore, the Stalin regime was characterised by authoritarian and central control. There was a tendency to bring authority and discipline back to schools and a continued tendency towards politicising education, as there had been under Lenin. It would appear, however, that the emphasis in political indoctrination had shifted from direct political propaganda to patriotism. The antagonism towards religion continued, as it had existed under the previous regime. Stalinistic education at schools was also characterised by a tendency to move from polytechnic to academic education. Because this research is primarily an educational one, it cannot simply reflect a portion of educational history. In order to determine the educational quality of education at schools in the erstwhile Soviet Union, the Stalinistic education system is evaluated critically from the pedagogic perspectives. In this process several educational criteria are used, because the author believes that meaningful evaluation, even in this post-modernistic era, cannot take place without a suitable measuring rod. From this scrutiny it would appear that the erstwhile Soviet education had some merit, but that it was also bowed under certain serious shortcomings. The findings of this research are summed up in the last chapter. However, one cannot end with an evaluation of Stalinistic education and leave it at that. The implications of these findings for contemporary South African education through a comparative perspective on both countries' educational situations are taken into account in a final chapter. The thesis is thus placed in a contemporary South African context. As a result, some critical comment on the contemporary educational developments in the RSA is offered in the light of the findings of the thesis. A number of recommendations regarding South African education are also made.
