Sc) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1993. The natural vegetation of the Stellenbosch Region is invaded by exotic herbaceous species. The invasion shows the same tendencies as occurs in other Mediterranean Regions (Groves 1991, Wilson & Sykes 1988). No sign of displacement of any of the indigenous species was found in any of the three vegetation types studied. These vegetation types include, Mountain Fynbos, West Coast Renosterveld and the riparian vegetation of the Eerste River. In the case of the first two vegetation types, the influence of disturbance, time and distance from a cultivated field was examined. For the riparian vegetation the relationship between the down river distance and the percentage exotic herbaceous cover is examined. The nature of invasion and displacement is examined in similar ways for all three vegetation types. The relationship between the degree of exotic herbaceous species invasion and vegetation type are tested by means of hypotheses. Data for Mountain Fynbos and West Coast Renosterveld are recorded for eleven sites, by means of three transects of six (5 m X 10 m) plots per transect. The riparian vegetation is examined at 10 sites of two (2.5 m X 20 m) plots per site. Environmental data as well as the percentage cover and the number of individuals of all species are recorded. The greatest number of exotic herbaceous species occur in Mountain Fynbos, while the most exotic herbaceous individuals are found in disturbed West Coast Renosterveld. In the riparian vegetation of the Eerste River the down river distance and the percentage of exotic herbaceous cover are positively correlated. The exotic herbaceous invader with the highest importance value for the study area is Briza maxima.
