The aim of this investigation was to do a situation analysis of sex education in secondary schools, geographically situated in the West Boland rural area. At the time of the investigation these schools were controlled by the Cape Education Department (Administration: House of Assembly). The investigation consisted of two parts, a study of relevant South African and international research literature, and an empirical investigation when questionnaires were used as the research technique. The situation analysis can be differentiated into the following components: - the determination of the current national education policy regarding sex education in the Republic of South Africa; - the determination of the Cape Education Department policy regarding sex education and the implementation of the policy, as well as determining the way in which it was experienced; - the identification of the needs of the pupils regarding sex education; - the formulation of guidelines aimed at the composition of future sex education programmes. The data required was obtained in August 1992 by means of two different questionnaires. One of these questionnaires was addressed to a representative random sample of secondary school pupils in the West Boland rural area. The other questionnaire was addressed to all persons in a policy-determining capacity in the identified schools. Post graduate students in Education as potential future implementors of sex education were also involved in completing the adult questionnaire. Additional information was obtained by personal interviews and correspondence with experts in the field of sex education. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die ondersoek was om 'n situasie-analise van geslagsopvoeding in sekondêre skole, geografies geleë in die Wes-Bolandse platteland, te maak. Ten spyte van die ondersoek was dié skole onderhewig aan die beleid soos voorgeskryf deur die Kaaplandse Onderwysdepartement (Administrasie: Volksraad). Die ondersoek het uit twee dele bestaan, naamlik 'n literatuurstudie van relevante Suid-Afrikaanse en internasionale werke, en 'n empiriese ondersoek waar vraelyste die navorsingstegniek was. Die situasie-analise kan in die volgende kompnente gedifferensieer word: - die bepaling van die huidige nasionale opvoedingsbekleid insake geslagsopvoeding in die Republiek van Suid-Afrika; - die bepaling van die beleid van die Kaaplandse Onderwysdepartement insake geslagsopvoeding en die wyse waarop dié beleid geïmplimenteer en beleef is; - die identifisering van leerlingbehoeftes insake geslagsopvoeding; - die formulering van riglyne vir die samestelling van toekomstige geslagsopvoedingsprogramme. Die data wat benodig was, is met behulp van twee verskillende vraelyste gedurende Augustus 1992 verkry. Een vraelys is gerig aan 'n verteenwordigende, ewekansige monster van sekondêre skoolleerlinge in die Wes-Bolandse platteland. Die ander vraelys is gerig aan alle persone in 'n beleidbepalende hoedanigheid in die betrokke skole. Na-graadse studente in die Opvoedkunde as potensiële toekomstige implementeerders van geslagsopvoeding is ook by laasgenoemde vraelys betrek. Verdere inligting is bekom deur persoonlike onderhoude en korrespondensie met kundiges op die gebied van geslagsopvoeding.
