The purpose of the study was to do an investigation with regard to the utilisation of group supervision by supervisors at particular welfare organisations in the Cape Peninsula. Motivation for this investigation arose from the need for cost-effective supervision in a welfare organisation. A theoretical survey of group supervision was provided which may serve as a guideline for practising supervisors. The theoretical survey includes the connection between different staff-gatherings that form part of the total staff development programme. Furthermore, the administrative, educational and supportive functions of supervision applicable to a group context were illustrated. A comprehensive survey of the process of group supervisions was subsequently explained, with an explanation of advantage and disadvantages that group supervision holds for the welfare organisations, the supervisors, the social worker and he client system.
