As is known, most of the participants in the Great Trek came from the eastern districts of the Cape Colony. However, a significant group of people left the Swellendam district between 1825 and 1845, not all of whom became Voortrekkers. Some of these families stayed permanently in the northern and north-eastern districts of the Cape Colony (e.g. Colesberg, Beaufort, Graaff-Reinet and Worcester) or continued their travels after a time. The purpose of this study is to determine the causes of the “migration”, and over and above the well-known grievances voiced by emigrants elsewhere, to determine whether the causes were of the same nature. The purpose is also to determine why many Swellendam-trekkers apparently settled temporarily in the north-eastern districts and crossed the border only several years later and why others settled permanently in these districts and did not become Voortrekkers, as originally planned. The scope, general nature and influence of this migration phenomenon will also be defined and evaluated.
