J. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Music. Blow, John, -- d. 1708 -- Criticism and interpretation Composers -- England -- Biography Dissertations -- Music Thesis (MMus) -- Stellenbosch University, 1993. The secular vocal work of John Blow (1647–1708) is the focal point in this thesis. This genre is discussed more specifically as it manifests itself in the "Amphion Anglicus" (1700) – a set of fifty songs for one to four voices with basso continuo (occasionally with flute and violin obbligati). These songs have been analysed and the content of texts, the style and formal aspects, and the word-tone relationships are commented upon. "Crudities" (Burney) and peculiarities of Blow's style are highlighted. To have a better understanding of Blow as Restoration composer, the social and political climate during the Commonwealth also deserves comment. The intention is to place Blow in perspective with his contemporaries and to evaluate his position as being representative of the Restoration music practice. As it is impossible to separate text and music prominent features of the literature were also considered. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of Blow and in this way to understand his position in English music culture. The quality of the texts fluctuates. Most of the poems used were by amateur poets; a few are by more established poets – Dryden and Waller, to name two. The musical settings reflect the style of the Restoration but also that of the Elizabethan, Italian, French and folk music spheres. The use of the ground bass is of importance (sixteen of the songs reflect the use of the ground in some way). Typical harmonic "misdemeanours" from the harmonic-technical norm are false relations, simultaneous use of the raised and lowered leading note in the minor mode and the unusual resolution of dissonant intervals. Stereotype wordpainting and prolonged melismas are used. Blow is a composer at the end of an era and is worthy of an appropriate place after Henry Purcell in the Restoration music of England - in church music, but also with regard to his secular vocal works, Masters 2012-08-27T11:38:48Z 2012-08-27T11:38:48Z 1993 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/58084 af Stellenbosch University 233 pages : ill., music application/pdf Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University
