D.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1993. The behaviour of proteoid as well as non-proteoid roots of the species Protea repens was researched. Analyses and field observations indicated that the low P and N content of the experimental area, had no visible restrictive effect on the growth of these plants. Research indicated that P and N could, from time to time, be translocated from the proteoid roots to the non-proteoid roots, as well as other surface areas of the plants. Field observation indicated that a large number of proteoid roots are frequently found in rotten organic material. Studies done using radioactive material and excised roots of P. repens plants indicated that P absorption occured more readily in the proteoid than the non-proteoid roots. The absorption of P by both root types was not meaningfully influenced by growth medium pH changes between 4 and 7. P. repens plants which were exposed to increased levels of Mn, showed no sign of Mn toxicity. In contrast to P. repens, Acacia saligna plants showed a low tolerance towards increased Mn concentrations. P. repens as well as A. saligna plants which were exposed to increased Fe concentrations showed no visible signs of toxicity or deficiency symptoms in the above ground tissues . The sugar content in the foliage of both plant types was the highest at an optimum Fe concentration of 1 Omg.dm-3 in the growth medium.
