The problem of text selection in preaching must be approached systematically and contextually. A systematical approach to the selection of a text can be served by programme planning or curricular development for preaching. This, however, is hampered by the problem of method in practical theology. A pneumatological perspective on programme design offers a dual solution of the method problem. Firstly it opens the way to a bipolar approach to programme design which creates room for pneumatological creativity and secondly enables the development of theological methods for programme planning from models from the behaviourial sciences. A contextual approach to the problem of text selection in preaching takes into account the double context of the sermon. The preachment is in an ecclesiastical context; namely the public worship, the congregation, the denomination, the ecumenical and the Kingdom of God. However, the sermon is also delivered in the context of the particular community, the society and the world. A contextual approach to programme planning is therefore an systematical approach. Keeping in mind the planning of the growth of the congregation by preaching, the cohesion between sermon, public worship and congregational structures is of particular importance. This cohesion can be expressed as the cohesion between the constructs of liturgics/homiletics, cybernetics, catechesis and paraclesis. Within this cohesion public worship forms the integrating central point.
