Communication in education Xhosa language -- Ability testing Xhosa language -- Study and teaching -- Foreign speakers Dissertations -- Xhosa language Studieprojek (M.A.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1994. The aim of this study is to explore the communicative approach to language testing, while the focus is on the evaluation of oral and listening skills of Xhosa Second Language. Examples of effective oral and listening tests are provided. According to Davies (1990), language testing is central to language teaching. It provides goals for language teaching, and it monitors, for both teachers and learners, success in reaching their goals. According to Weir (1988), there has recently been a marked shift in emphasis, with respect to the approach to test design, from the linguistic, to the communicative dimension. The emphasis is no longer on grammatical accuracy, but on the ability to function effectively through language in particular contexts of situation. In the second part of this study, we consider communicative language testing, while we look at the role of content and testing techniques in the accuracy of a test. We pay attention to Bachman's (1990) argument that a clear and explicit definition of language ability is essential to all language test developement and use. We also consider the relation between testing in general and language testing, and discuss the aim and use of language tests. In the third part, communicative language ability is discussed as well as the approach towards test design. We refer to Bachman's framework of communicative language ability. In the fourth part of the study, we consider the requirements of language tests. According to Davies (1990), language testing is mainly about being explicit as to what has been learnt, and controlling uncertainty through statistical operations. Two terms for what he calls "making explicit" an "controlling uncertainty", are validity and reliability. We explicate these two terms. In the fifth part of this study, we consider test methods. We discuss Hughes's (1989) stages of test construction as well as different test techniques in general, after which we relate it to the communicative testing of oral and listening skills. In die sixth part of the study, we discuss the oral and listening tests that were done by standerd 8-pupils. We pay attention to the preparation and administration of the tests and discuss the interpretation of the test results. The supplement to part six contains the tests which are submitted as examples of effective oral and listening tests. In the concluding section, a summary is given of the previous sections.
