Over a period of 5 years, different spring wheat cultivars were planted in the winter rainfall region of South Africa at 9 localities arranged as a factorial experiment. By using the statistical procedure of forward selection, those climatic variables with the highest partial correlation with quality, were selected and used to develop regression models. These regression models however failed to predict quality at high confidence levels. This is possibly due to the insensitivity of the method of analysis used, although the likelihood of weak correlations in the experiment cannot be excluded. Variation in yield and its possible effect on the quality of wheat, was also investigated as reason for the poor prediction value of the regression models. The correlation (R² = 0.3) between quality and yield was however too low to be significant. Large variation in quality and/or yield was apparent at different localities, indicating that large differences in N supply of residual nitrogen of soils was an important factor which influenced quality, in spite of high fertiliser rates (150 kg/ha N) which were applied in split applications. This study shows that to predict the quality of wheat, is difficult, because it is influenced by various factors which are interdependent.
