In this discourse it has been attempted to indicate the complementary nature of DIE and theatre in the development of the child. In order to achieve this the child's development in playing and those aspects dealing directly with drama and theatre have been researched. As sufficient research has been done in connection with DIE it has been thought desirable to concentrate on actual theatre activities in certain Cape primary and high schools. It was necessary to take a test at random by means of questionnaires in order to determine what exactly has been happening in this regard before an evaluation and recommendations could be made on a firmer basis. To the teacher interested in theatre activities a prototype of possible and relevant activities for a dramatic society has been included. Finally the possibilities for a course in school theatre resulting in an additional qualification has been examined.
