Sc.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1989. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The various distribution patterns exhibited by the South African mistletoe species were investigated. On the basis of distribution area (number of grids) and the distribution density (averag~ number of were distinguished, viz. records per grid), four groups 1. Species with a wide distribution and a high collection density 2. Species with a wide distribution and a low collection density 3. Species with a restricted distribution and a high collection density 4. Species with a restricted distribution and a low collection density The degree of association between selected mistletoes and their hosts were investigated and tested using different chi2 probability indices . . No host taxon was found to be exclusively parasitised by a single mistletoe taxon although a few mistletoe species were found to have strong positive associations with a singl~ host taxon. The association between Viscum combreticola and members of the genus Combretum illustrates the latter case. The taxonomic affinities between parasitised taxa (at order level) were examined based on the classification of Stebbins (1974) and Dahlgren (1980). The factors influencing the compatability between a mistletoe and its host were investigated and brought into context with the taxa that are not parasitised. 2012-08-27T12:09:34Z 2012-08-27T12:09:34Z 1989 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/66871 af_ZA Stellenbosch University 211 pages : illustrations. application/pdf Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University
