Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Music. Music -- Social aspects -- England Capitalism -- South Africa Dissertations -- Music Proefskrif (M. Mus.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1989. As an ideology capitalism involves a value orientation and an attitude which affects every individual, as well as society in its entirety. It is therefore justified to examine capitalistic man and the nature of consumer society as decisive for the functioning of music in modern Western societies. Music is not only influenced by capitalism; it has itself developed into a capitalistic industry. This concerns especially the pop music industry, in which music is marketed and distributed as a commodity through the mass media. A large turnover and standardization of products, important characteristics of this type of music, conflict with "artistic" demands for originality and individuality (characteristics which belong to the essence of art music). Aesthetic value and artistic integrity, if relevant at all, are therefore subjected to commercial considerations. Serious music is, however, also exposed to commercialization in the consumer society. The ideal of serious music, as a dynamic, relevant form of artistic expression, is in sharp contrast with the stagnant nature of the present music culture: due to a market-orientation and commercial attitudes a specific repertoire of "classical" music is promoted, while very little scope is left for renewal through the production of contemporary music. Modern patronage, from governments and private enterprises, reflects the nature of modern capitalist society in its attitude to the arts - and therefore fail to do justice to serious music. In agreement with the consumer society in general, patronage is characterized by a competition-oriented approach, through which the practice of serious music degenerates into an exhibition of technical virtuosity. With democratization of the arts and business sense as decisive factors in patronage, those aspects of the arts which are not commercial and thus dependent on patronage, are further neglected. In South Africa the problematic position of the arts in consumer society has a particular dimension, because of specific political and economic circumstances. While economic development in this century has made the creation of a "high culture" possible, economic progress has not brought about a concordant advancement of the serious music culture, because in South Africa, too, capitalism involves a lifestyle and value orientation in which artistic and spiritual values are subjected to financial prosperity. An examination of the relationship between capitalism and music reveals that music, too, is exposed to exploitation for commercial gain, through which music loses its artistic value and becomes a mere commodity on the market. This indicates a disfunctioning and prostitution of music in a society in which the capitalist ideology is allowed to dominate those aspects of life which actually fall outside economic considerations. 2012-08-27T12:09:36Z 2012-08-27T12:09:36Z 1989 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/66911 af_ZA Stellenbosch University 160 pages application/pdf Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University
