D. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Science. Dept. of Chemistry and Polymer Science. Esters Polymerization Chemical reactions Dissertations -- Chemistry Thesis (MSc) -- Stellenbosch University, 1990. A series of vinyl esters, differing in the length of the ester group, have been prepared by means of a transvinylation reaction. The kinetic characteristics of the free-radical bulk polymerization of these esters were studied. Differential scanning calorimetry was identified as the most suitable technique for the kinetic studies. Both the isothermal and dynamic scan methods were used to obtain results. The enthalpies of polymerization, the residual monomer content, the order of the reactions, the overall reaction rate constants and the overall activation energies were calculated. The results were used to compare the dynamic scan method with the isothermal method. The latter method gave better results. It was also clear from the results that the polymerization reaction proceeded with more difficulty with increasing length of the estergroup of the monomers.
