The purpose of this study is to document the origin, formation and happenings of men's hockey at the University of Stellenbosch. The history of the Western Province Men's Hockey Union and the South African Men's Hockey Union is also included in the research to give a more global view. To provide the necessary background information and to get a clear picture, the study has as an introduction the origin of hockey in the world. This is followed by the history of South African and Western Province hockey. The nucleus of this study concerns the development of men's hockey at the University of Stellenbosch. An attempt has been made to reconstruct all gathered information as accurately and as thoroughly as possible. Although there is much popular writing on sport in South Africa, the supply of scientific information is minimal. studies such as these are thus hampered by the unavailability of primary sports history information.
