A. Meyer, J. C. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Coeducation -- Psychological aspects Educational psychology Women -- Education (Secondary) Dissertations -- Psychology Proefskrif (M.A.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1990. At present the Provincial Education Departments follow the policy of co-education regarding secondary schools. The Education Departments of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State are very strongly opposed to single-sex schools and all new schools in these provinces are co-ed schools. The Cape Province and Natal on the other hand, do not enforce co-education if the parents prefer single-sex schools. In the literature there is still doubt about the advantages or disadvantages of co-education. It is important to determine whether preference to a specific type of school should be given because the adolescent spends more time in his school environment than in any other environment. The main objective of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference between study habits and attitudes, social relationships and certain personality factors of Afrikaans-speaking Std 8 girls in co-ed schools and Afrikaans-speaking Std 8 girls in single-sex schools. The sample consisted of 114 European pupils. The 57 pupils from two single-sex schools were paired off with 57 pupils from a co-ed school according to intelligence and hostel boarding. The subjects completed the Personal, Home, Social and Formal Relations Questionnaire (PHSF), the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA) and the High School Personality Questionnaire (HSPQ). The results indicate that, with the exception of two subscales, no significant differences were found between the two groups. Pupils from the single-sex schools obtained a significantly higher aggregate on Factor B of the HSPQ. Pupils from the co-ed school therefore seem to be more concrete in their thinking, while the pupils from the single-sex schools seem to be more abstract in their thinking. On Factor E of the HSPQ the pupils from the co-ed school obtained a significantly higher aggregate than the pupils from the single-sex schools. Pupils from the co-ed school are therefore possibly more dominant in their behaviour than the pupils of the single-sex schools. Despite the apparent differences between pupils of the two types of schools it is not justifiable to attribute these differences to school type alone. Many other variables such as socio-economic differences , family structure and family size, as well as the type of primary schools which were attended, which fell beyond the scope of this research have to be taken into account before valid deductions concerning the effect of school type on pupils can be made.
