AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Een van die aspekte van die probleem van vertraging by die plattelandse kleurlingkind, waarop die Universiteit van Stellenbosch moes ingaan, was die verband tussen vertraging op skool en sosio-ekonomiese agtergrond. Huidige sielkundiges huldig die opvatting dat omgewing, en by uitstek die sosiale omgewing, 'n belangrike vormende krag uitoefen op die reaksies en prestasies van die individu. Aan die hand hiervan is die hipotese toe gestel dat (die swak sosio-ekonomiese omstandighede van die kleurling 'n aanleidende rol speel by sy skolastiese vertraging.) Die geldigheid van hierdie stelling word in hierdie bepaalde ondersoek nagegaan.
