ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A survey has been carried out of the quantities and compositions of acidic industrial effluents in South Africa. A process flow diagram for the removal of sulphates from acidic industrial effluents using barium sulphide, is given. The sulphates are precipitated as barium sulphate. The barium sulphate is recovered by settling and filtration. The flux curve and filtration properties for barium sulphate was determined. Sulphides present in the water are stripped as H2S. Equations for stripping H2S from water utilizing recirculation, can be implemented for the optimization of the stripping process. The reduction of barium sulphate with carbon is discussed by means of a kinetic model. The influence of Fe2O3, SiO2 and Al2O3 on the reduction process has been determined. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Opname is gemaak van die omvang en samestelling van suur industriële uitvloeisels in Suid-Afrika. 'n Prosesvloeidiagram word voorgestel vir die gebruik van bariumsulfied om sulfate uit suur industriële uitvloeisels te verwyder en as bariumsulfaat te presipiteer. Besinking en filtrasie word gebruik om die bariumsulfaat te herwin. Die flukskromme vir die besinking van bariumsulfaat en die filtrasie-eienskappe van bariumsulfaat word gegee. Sulfiede word as H2S uit die water gestroop. Vergelykings word gegee om die stropping van H2S, met hersirkulasie, te optimiseer. Die reduksie van bariumsulfaat met koolstof word bespreek aan die hand van 'n kinetiese model. Die invloed van Fe2O3, SiO2 en Al2O3 op die reduksieproses is bepaal.
