The comprehensiveness of the field, as well as the changing roles and tasks of instructional leaders, on both intra- and interschool levels, have given rise to an increasing need for specialised and continuated professional training. Specialised training should provide to a greater extent for development of those leadership skills which have been identified as essential for effective instructional leadership. Group leadership capabilities can be perceived as important behavioural aspects of all instructional leaders. In the light of the preceding premises, the primary object of this study is the assessment and the continuated development of instructional leaders concerning their effective group leadership. To attain this object, the following course has been taken: - Effective group leadership presupposes that instructional leaders will have a thorough knowledge of group processes and changes. Therefore, a theoretical study is made of group development, group developmental stages are identified, and a group development model is abstracted. Particular emphasis is placed on the identification of group development phases, following the abstracted model and developmental phases. - Since each identified developmental phase reflects a particular job maturity level of a group, instructional leaders should continually adjust their leadership style to fulfil the leadership needs of the group in each phase. - Particular attention has been paid to group development and the application of an adapted leadership model in determining effective leadership styles. - In order to realise the primary object of this study, ten simulated in-tray-activities have been developed. These activities can serve as part of developmental programmes for further professional training. - Finally, the conclusion has been drawn that, in order to establish effective group leadership, group leaders must have the necessary knowledge and skills relating to basic leadership styles, group development phases, situational variables, task-related readiness, behavioural aspects of group leadership and their interdependence. Therefore it is desirable and highly recommended that in this regard, instructional leaders should be assessed and must undergo further professional development.
