T. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Mental health Physician and patient Psychologists Dissertations -- Psychology Werkstuk (M.A.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1990. This investigation originated as a result of the role played by the general medical practitioner as the first contact person in the mental health network. The high incidence of emotional and psychiatric problems among patients of general medical practitioners raises the question as to how these problems are attended to. The aim of the present study determine which emotional problems are experienced by patients of general medical practitioners and whether there are specific variables associated with these problems. The use of auxiliary services in the community, as well as the need for such services by patients of general medical practitioners is also investigated. To what extent general practitioners utilize the services of clinical psychologists, which type of services are required and how many patients will benefit from intervention by a clinical psychologist were also investigated. This study comprised of two separate investigations. The first project included ten medical practices situated in different areas of the Boland and Western Cape. The first 100 patients who visited the general medical practitioner within a specific period of time, had to complete a questionnaire about the worries they experienced and which auxiliary services they had used or would like to use. Only 414 questionnaires were returned. In the second project questionnaires were sent out to 883 general medical practitioners in the Boland and Western Cape. A total of 332 questionnaires were returned. From the results the following conclusions were reached: – 80% of the patients of general medical practitioners reported that they experienced some or other personal problem; – 37,6% of the respondents reported that they suffered from tension; – urban respondents generally reported a higher occurrence of emotional problems; – only 4,1% of the patients consulted a psychologist the previous year, whereas 21,9% indicated that they would like to consult a psychologist; – a larger percentage patients indicated that they would like to consult a psychologist, compared to general medical practitioners estimates; – general medical practitioners in both urban and rural areas felt that they use the services of psychologists to the same extent.
