Although stress is generally a popular topic of discussion, relatively little research has been done in the field of work stress as experienced at local authorities in South Africa. South Africa maintains a low productivity rate and calls for higher productivity are the order of the day. The above-mentioned necessitates attention to any factor which curbs the pursuit of higher productivity. Modern man functions in his working situation under ever-increasing pressure. Stress cumulates with time, causing him to be subject to stress to a greater extent than ever before. Therefore handling mechanisms and skills must be created to assure effective functioning in and out of the working situation.
