ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The construction and functioning of the hydraulic driven towing trolly al the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch is discussed in detail after which the equivalent non-linear mathematical model is derived from basic principles. It is evident from the theoretical study that the trolly has a first order open loop structure, while the total closed loop system is a second order system. A simulation program was written to simulate the dynamic response of the towing trolly. The data that specifies the simulation model was obtained partly from the theoretical analysis and partly from experimental tests. The experimental tests were carried out to verify the theoretical model. The prepressure of the accumulators and effective towing resistance of the trolly was respectively calculated from the system pressure and the pressure difference across the hydraulic motors during experimental test runs. The experimental results correspond favourably with the eventual simulated results. The dynamic analysis of the trolly with the final simulation program lead to the following recommendations. The prepressure of the accumulators should he increased to at least 200 bar to obtain maximum system pressure at all times. Four­ wheeled propulsion should utilized during the constant speed phase for tests carried out at speeds in excess of 6.5 m/s. However, to accommodate such high speeds it would he essential to increase the overall length of the existing towing tank. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die konstruksie en funksionering van die hidroulies aangedrewe sleeptrollie by die Departement Meganiese Ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch word breedvoerig bespreek waarna die ekwivalente nie-lineêre wiskundige model uit basiese beginsels afgelei word. Dit is duidelik uit die teoretiese studie dat die trollie 'n eerste orde ooplus struktuur het, terwyl die totale geslote lus stelsel 'n tweede orde stelsel is. 'n Simulasieprogram is geskryf om die dinamiese reaksie van die sleeptrollie te simuleer. Die data wat die simulasiemodel spesifiseer, is deels uit die teoretiese analise en deels uit eksperimentele toetse verkry. Die eksperimentele toetse is uitgevoer om die teoretiese model te verifieer. Die voordruk van die akkumulators en effektiewe sleepweerstand van die trollie is onderskeidelik uit die stelseldruk en die drukverskil oor die hidrouliese motors tydens eksperimentele toetslopies bereken. Die eksperimentele resultate stem gunstig ooreen met die uiteindelike gesimuleerde resultate. Die dinamiese ontleding van die trollie met die finale simulasieprogram lei tot die volgende aanbevelings. Die voordruk van die akkumulators moet verhoog word tot minstens 200 bar om te alle tye maksimum stelseldruk te verkry. Vierwielaandrywing moet tydens die konstante spoedfase gebruik word vir toetse wat uitgevoer word teen snelhede van meer as 6,5 m/s. Om sulke hoë snelhede te akkommodeer sou dit egter noodsaaklik wees om die algehele lengte van die bestaande sleeptenk te vergroot.
