Since the discovery that the normal meiotic behaviour in wheat is under genetic control, it was shown that a gene, Ph1, on the long arm of chromosome 5B suppresses the pairing of homoeologous chromosomes in tetraploid and hexaploid wheat. The removal of this arm or mutating Ph1 to ph1 not only permits the wheat homoeologues to pair with each other, but also with introduced alien homoeologues. In an attempt to transfer various genes from the indigenous coastal wheat grass, Thinopyrum disticum (Thunb.) Löve (2n = 28), to durum wheat, Triticum turgidum L. cv. group durum (2n = 28), the former species was used to pollinate the 'Langdon' disomic-5D-nullisomic-5B substitution line [Ldn 5D(5B)]. The resulting 5B deficient hybrid (2n = 28) had better meiotic pairing in the PMCs than the normal T. durum/Th. distichum hybrid, viz. 9.5I, 7.14II, 0.68III, 0.52IV and 14.12I, 4.81II, 0.38III, 0.75IV respectively. Unfortunately the genetic cross-overs produced by the homoeologous synapses could not be recovered since the hybrids were completely infertile. Semi-fertile amphiploids were obtained after colchicine treatment of the hybrids. The normal C2 amphiploids (2n = 56) with Ph1 had better meiotic pairing than the single Ph1 deficient C2 amphiploid obtained (2n = 54). The latter amphiploid on back-crossing to the 'Creso' ph1c mutant gave rise to a Ph1 deficient secondary amphiploid with 2n = 41. Its PMCs had less bivalents but more multivalents than those of the partial amphiploid checks (2n = 42) which was homozygous to Ph1, viz. 6.02I; 15.63II; 6.37III; 0.63IV and 3.18I; 18.82II; 0.12III; 0.19IV respectively. The prospects of obtaining desirable genetic transfers should be enhanced by a further back-cross of the Ph1 deficient partial amphiploid to the 'Creso' ph1c mutant or the Ldn 5D(5B) substitution line to produce Ph1 deficient pentaploids (2n = 35) in which the single set of Th. distichum chromosomes will only be able to pair with their durum homoeologues.
