Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Ancient Studies. Aratus, Solensis -- Phaenomena Astronomy, Greek Education -- Greece -- History Dissertations -- Classical culture Tesis (M. Litt. et Phil..) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1991. The progress of Greek scientific astronomy in the Hellenistic time was made possible by the contributions of Heracleides, Archimedes, Eratosthenes, Apollonius and Hipparchus. The most important planetary theories of the time were the homocentric and eccentric and epicyclic theories. The only heliocentric theory was proposed by Aristarchus, but it was rejected by other scholars of the time. Mesopotamic astronomy attained a high level of development at the same time. This was made possible by the good mathematical foundation provided in the Old-Babylonian time. The most remarkable achievement of the Babylonian scholars was the development of the sexagesimal system which, together with the decimal system, led to a good placeworth notation system. Egyptian astronomy was never practised as a science. Arithmeticians used mainly additions with many adjustments for difficult phenomena. This led to qualitative rather than quantitative results. The position of astronomy in the Hellenistic school syllabus was determined by the limited function of astronomy in society. There was no systematic, scientific teaching and astronomy was important in the measurement of time as well as the determining of festive days and the start of the ploughing and sowing seasons. The prevailing educational ideal was another factor and according to that astronomy was a fixed part of the so-called "encyclopedic education" in which it was taught in an elementary and popular way. The Phainomena of Arat was the most popular science handbook of the Hellenistic time. He followed a humanistic approach to astronomy. It is not a didactic poem, but rather a philosophical poem. Two secondary levels can be discerned in the poem, namely practical teachings to the farmer and the sea-farer and scientific data.
