In the present study an attempt was made to investigate some personality traits of young adult males and females from different family structures, namely intact families, divorced single-parent families and stepfamilies. The sample consisted of 227 people between 18 and 27 years old who visited the regional branch of the HSRC in Cape Town for vocational guidance and selection purposes and completed the 16PF as part of the test battery. Information from the Biographical Questionnaire: Vocational Guidance of the HSRC was used to divide the 16PF data of the sample into six different groups according to gender and family structure. Those who lost one or both parents through death were not included in the sample. The first four second-order factors of the 16PF, Extraversion, Anxiety, Tough Poise and Independence were calculated for each sub group. Parametric multivariate analysis of variance was done to determine whether there were any significant differences between the subgroups. Gender and family structure were used as independent variables with Extraversion, Anxiety, Tough Poise and Independence as dependent variables. Results revealed significant differences (p < 0,001) between the anxiety scores of the males and females as well as between the anxiety scores of the three different family structure groups (p < 0,05).
