A. Smit, D. J. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Theology. Dept. of Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology. Bible. Old Testament -- Criticism, interpretation, etc. Poor -- Biblical teaching Liberation theology Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 1991. In the ongoing theological debate on the role of the Church in the social ethical sphere and especially the Church’s involvement in situations of poverty, economic exploitation and political injustice some arguments are based, inter alia, on analogies from the Old Testament. The relevance of this discussion for the Church today and the hypothesis that the Old Testament as the Book of faith for the “ancient” people of God, but also as an indispensable component of the Christian Bible, should be given the opportunity to answer for itself, have served as stimuli and motivation for this study. During the preliminary assessment of the data with regard to the subject, it became evident that the key to the understanding of GOD’S COMPASSION FOR THE HELPLESS AMONG HIS PEOPLE is to be found in His intimate relationship with his people. Outside the theological context of election and covenant and the dynamic interaction between indicative and imperative, between gift and obedience and between grace and judgment, God’s compassion for the helpless cannot be fully appreciated. This intimate relationship between God and his people (CHAPTER ONE) therefore operates as the unifying principle for the cross section approach of this research on God’s compassion for the helpless in the psalms (CHAPTER TWO), the law (CHAPTER THREE), the prophets (CHAPTER FOUR) and the wisdom literature (CHAPTER FIVE). God’s compassion, to begin with, becomes apparent in the cosmic universal sphere. As the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe He provides for all creatures. In the historic-particularistic sphere He bestowed his compassion upon Israel. In the enigmatic announcement of His Name (Ex 3:14) He revealed Himself in Israel’s history as the Living God, the Redeemer and the Holy One and the various manifestations of his compassion have been demonstrated in his acts of grace, mercy, longsuffering, love and loyalty (Ex 34:6). In these tokens of his affection lie the guaranty for God’s compassion, on the intimate-personal level, for the helpless who have been wronged and are exploited. The fact that God is always on the side of justice, irrespective of the person involved, is of prime importance to the helpless. On account of this God is known as the Father and Protector of the personae miserabiles.
