Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Self-perception in children Children -- Institutional care -- Psychological aspects Child psychology Dissertations -- Psychology Tesis (M.A.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1991. This study attempts to compare the self-concept of the child in a children's home with that of a child under parental guidance in order to determine whether any significant differences exist. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire which was used, was also investigated. Children between standards two and five from a children's home in the country were used as subjects. The control group consisted of children from a primary school in the same town. These subjects were paired to eliminate the possible influence of the following variables on the self-concept of the children: geographical environment, age, sex and scholastic achievements during the examination in June 1990. Two measuring instruments were used. The Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale was used to get an indication of the child's opinion of his own self-concept. A Semantic Differential was also compiled by the researcher. In order to get an indication of how the adult evaluates the child's self-concept, the above Differential was completed by the teacher or matron who knew the child best. The relationship between the two scores was then researched to get an indication of the validity of the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale within the circumstances of the investigation. Both measuring instruments were applied during the third term of 1990. Paired t-tests were used to examine whether any significant differences exist between the scores of the experimental - and the control group. This was applied to the total scores, as well as to the scores obtained on the individual sub-scales. The Kuder-Richardson Index was used to test the reliability of the questionnaire. The validity of the questionnaire was tested against the product moment correlation coefficient. The results of the investigation indicate that there are no significant differences between the experimental - end control groups regarding the total scores as well as the sub-scale scores. Although it was found that the Piers-Harris Self-Concept questionnaire was reasonably reliable, it was not a valid measuring instrument, the present research circumstances.
