Coal mines and mining -- South Africa -- Management Transportation -- Management Logistics -- Planning Bosjesspruit Steenkoolmyn (Secunda, South Africa) Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Tesis (M.Ing) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1991. The study was undertaken to investigate all aspects regarding the transport of material, personnel and equipment at an underground colliery. The system that includes all aspects which are influenced by transport, is the logistic system of the mine. The thesis deals with the short, as well as long-term optimization of the logistic system of an underground colliery. The study was undertaken at Bosjesspruit, one of the collieries at the Secunda Collieries complex. The high production rate as well as the number and content of underground activities put a high demand on the mine's infrastructure, equipment and logistic system management. Secunda Collieries is the biggest underground colliery complex in the world. Several factors are of importance in the analysis of the logistic system of an underground colliery. The following are the most important: estimated lifetime of the mine, production rate, existing infrastructure, geological conditions and the current development phase of the mine. When analizing the logistic activities of the mine, a systems approach is essential, because the different subsystems of the mine are interdependent. To maximize the profit of the colliery the subsystems must be managed on an integrated basis.A variety of transport and management systems are used worldwide in collieries, each with its own unique properties. Some logistic systems provide a better service to specific applications than others. The choice of the type of transport system for a mine is important because it has a significant influence on the profit. In the case of Secunda Collieries, a combination of a centralised and dedicated decentralised management system with free-steered diesel powered vehicles seems to be the most effective alternative.A model of the logistic system was developed to take into account the effect of most of the dependent components on other subsystems of the mine. It consists of a simulation model and a cost model. The cost model calculates an expected annual profit for a specific combination of values of the variables. The distance from the service shaft to the production sections and the capacity of the transport system are some of the most important variables. Different scenarios could be evaluated with one another based on the expected annual profit. The sensitivity of the system for a change in specific variables was also evaluated. The influence of the most important variables on the profit of the colliery was established. The model was used in the comparison of different alternatives in establishing satellite shafts for different mines. It is recommended that the model is used in future for optimizing short term management of the logistic system. It could also be used for the long-term planning of the logistic infrastructure.
