The report of the Surgeon General's Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health (Theron, 1972) indicated that personality differences occur between cigarette smokers and non-smokers. In order to obtain a clearer understanding of smoking behaviour, differences in personality, selfconcept, personal, home, social and formal relationship were investigated. This study was designed to explore the relationship between adolescent smoking behaviour of standard six, seven and eight white high school pupils from four different high schools in Stellenbosoch. Four questionnaires, a Biographical questionnaire (designed by the researcher), the Personal, Home, Social and Formal Relations Questionnaire (PHSF), the High School Personality Questionnaire (HSPV) and the Coopersmith Selfconcept Inventory were completed anonymously by 1000 Afrikaans and English speaking white adolescents (459 boys 541 girls). The different groups were divided according to gender and home language. Each of these groups was then divided into groups of smokers and non-smokers. Smoking status (never, trier, regular smoker) was based on information obtained from the Biographical questionnaire. Pupils who reported themselves as smoking one or more cigarettes on a regular basis were classified as smokers while pupils who had only tried or had never smoked were classified as non-smokers. Altogether 18% of the adolescents in this study was found to be regular smokers. Comparisons were made between English and Afrikaans speaking boys and between English and Afrikaans speaking girls.
