Scheduling is an important task in any manufacturing company and different methods of scheduling exist Material Requirements Planning, Just-in-Time and Optimized Production Technology are three examples of such methods. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the possibilities of improving an existing scheduling software package, called DBPlan. This package uses discrete event simulation to perform forward scheduling. The method used by the scheduling package to forward schedule tasks, results in realistic schedules. The finite capacity of resources is taken into account and the discrete event simulation technique provides a structured approach to scheduling. The need however exists to improve the schedules generated by the DBPlan package. With this aim and after further investigation into the OPT scheduling philosophy, it was decided to identify certain OPT principles to incorporate into the DBPlan scheduling procedure. These principles should be easily understood as the simplicity of the DBPlan package is regarded as a good characteristic.
