Ed.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1992. Distressing reports on environmental degradation have been featuring prominently in the media during the past few years. The quality of the environment is put under constant strain, which leads to an increasing number of problems. On the one hand the human race, and its actions, is solely responsible for the causes of these issues, but on the other hand it is also a victim thereof. It is essential to ensure that natural life-sustaining systems survive, because man's quality of life depends on them and it is generally accepted that education alone can equip man for this task. Education in general should prepare individuals to act responsibly in their environment. Biology teaching can fulfil a central role in the maturing-to-adulthood of the child by providing basic biological knowledge and encouraging the development of specific life skills. In view of the increasing nature of enviromental and social issues, it seems as if education has not been successful in the past. In this study it will be investigated to which extent biology as a school subject has succeeded, taking into account its historic-fundametal background. a limited empirical study will be conducted to determine whether the biology teacher is sufficiently qualified for this task. An attempt was also made to see whether the so-called "environmental crisis" could be addressed by sound curriculum planning of the existing biology syllabus.
