Since Albert Ellis's formulation of the Rational-Emotive Theory and Therapy in the mid fifties, cognitive psychology has had an enormous impact on the field of psychology in general, and on the behaviour psychology in particular. The influence exerted was so huge that assessment of the empirical status of this theory became imperative. Consequently, in the following years, several instruments were developed to assess irrational cognitions quantitatively and qualitatively. Gradually these instruments were further developed and refined until, in 1986, Demaria, Kassinova and Dill developed the Survey of Personal Beliefs (SPB). This particular instrument met most of the points of criticism leveled against earlier forms of this type of questionnaire.
