ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Social Work Supervision is an indirect service to provide an effective and goal-achieving service. The supervisor enhances the knowledge, skill and attitude of the supervisee and thereby enables him to meet the demands for accountability. To assure effective supervision, requires policy for social work supervision. The goal of this study was to examine how social work supervision was done in the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services and to determine whether policy for social work supervision exists. This study was also aimed at providing the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services, Western-Cape with guidelines for the development of policy for social work supervision. The study focused on the structure, goal and function of the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services. The development, services and integration of the Department of Social Work in the Cape Provincial Administration: Branch Hospital- and Health Services was explored. Medical services is the primary function of the hospital and social work services therefore fulfill a supplementary role in the hospital. A description has been given of the knowledge and skill the social worker will need about the hospital in which he is working, the people whom he helps, the problems he has to deal with, the process through which help is given and the application of himself as an instrument. The goal, function, nature and demands of supervision was studied. The supervisors' administrative-, educational- and supportive functions have been discribed and this brought forward the requirements and responsibilities of the supervisors. The educational function of the supervisor provide the basis for supervision and refers to the use of an educational model, -evaluation and -program for each social worker. The supervisor should be able to utilize both methods of supervision and be capable of doing supervision by contract Selection criteria should be applied and training in supervision should be made compulsary. Policy for social work supervision should be formulated and implemented. This study indicates the process whereby policy should be developed, describe the aspects of concern when policy is implemented and stipulate how policy should be evaluated. If these suggestions are taken into account when policy for social work supervision is drawn up, the policy could be used as a guideline for supervision services. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Maatskaplikewerk-supervisie is 'n indirekte diens wat meer effektiewe en doeltreff ende dienslewering tot gevolg bet Dit impliseer dat deur middel van supervisie die maatskaplike werker se kennis, vaardigheid en houding sodanig verhoog word, dat hy beter in staat sal wees om aan die toenemende eise vir aanspreeklikheid te voldoen. Om hierdie doelstelling deur middel van supervisie te bereik, moet die klem op effektiewe supervisieleiding geplaas word. Ten einde te verseker dat supervisors 'n effektiewe diens lewer, moet daar beleid vir maatskaplikewerk-supervisie neergele word. Die doel van hierdie ondersoek was om vas te stel hoe supervisie binne die Kaapse Provinsiale Administrasie: Tak Hospitaalen Gesondheidsdienste gedoen word en om te bepaal of daar beleid vir maatskaplik:ewerk-supervisie bestaan. Hierdie studie betook ten doel gehad om vir die Kaapse Provinsiale Administrasie: Tak Hospitaal- en Gesondheidsdienste, WesKaap riglyne vir die opstel van beleid vir maatskaplik:ewerk-supervisie daar te stel Daar is gelet op die samestelling, doel en funksie van die Kaapse Provinsiale Administrasie: Tak Hospitaal- en Gesondheidsdienste. Terself dertyd is daar meer breedvoering gekyk na die totstandkoming, werksaamhede en inskakeling van die Departement Maatskaplike Werk binne die Kaapse Provinsiale Administrasie: Tak Hospitaal- en Gesondheidsdienste. Aangesien die geneeskundige dienste die primere rol in die hospitaal vervul, word maatskaplikewerk-dienslewering as 'n aanvullende diens beskou. 'n Uiteensetting is gegee van die kennis en vaardigheid wat die maatskaplike werker benodig oor die hospitaal waar dienste gelewer word, die persone aan wie hulp verleen word, die probleme wat hanteer word, die proses waarvolgens hulpverlening geskied en die benutting van homself in die verband. Aandag is aan die doel, funksies, inhoud en vereistes van supervisie geskenk. Die supervisor se administratiewe-, onderrig- en ondersteunende funksie word bespreek en hieruit blyk die vereistes en verantwoordelikhede van die supervisor se taak, duidelik. Die onderrigproses is die grondslag van supervisie en sluit die opstel van 'n onderrigmodel, onderrigevaluering en onderrigprogram vir elke maatskaplike werker in. In die onderigproses, moet die supervisors in staat wees om albei metodes van supervisie te kan benut en om van die opstel van 'n supervisiekontrak gebruik te kan maak. Daar moet van keuringstandaarde gebruik gemaak word, om te verseker dat supervisors oor formele opleiding vir supervisie sal beskik. Dit is noodsaaklik dat beleid vir maatskaplikewerk-supervisie geformuleer en ge<mplementeer moet word. In hierdie studie word die proses waardeur beleid ontwikkel word, die aspekte van belang met die implementering van die beleid en die wyse waarop die germplementeerde beleid geevalueer moet word, uiteengesit Indien beleid vir maatskaplikewerk-supervisie hiervolgens ontwikkel word, sal dit as 'n riglyn vir supervisiedienste kan dien. Deur beleid vir maatskaplikewerk-supervisie daar te stel, sal 'n unifonne standaard van effektiewe en doeltreffende supervisie verseker kan word. Die empiriese ondersoek is aan die hand van 'n vraelys gedoen. Dit bet inligting rakende die werksbesonderhede van die hoof de, asook die benutting van supervisie binne die Kaapse Provinsiale Administrasie: Tak Hospitaal- en Gesondheidsdienste aan die lig gebring. Na aanleiding van die bevindinge van die empiriese ondersoek, is 'n aantal aanbevelings aan die hand gedoen. Indien hierdie aanbevelings geimplementeer kan word, sal die beleid vir maatskaplikewerk-supervisie 'n effektiewe supervisiediens binne die maatskaplikewerk-professie verseker.
