A review of the literature demonstrates that qualitative research on psychotherapy can be done by a third person. The researcher may participate through the processes of participant observation and interviewing, in the experiences of the therapist and the client. The aim of the present study was to provide a review of the literature on the principles and procedures of qualitative research with specific reference to phenomenological research. Descriptive notes on the experiences of four therapists and eight clients during the intake phase at the Unit for Educational Psychology at the University of Stellenbosch were given. No hypotheses were made with the current study, and the researcher tried to describe, rather than to interpret the experiences of the therapists, clients and parents. Demonstration cases were observed by the researcher during the pilot study, and semi-structured questionnaires based on the descriptive notes were developed. The researcher observed the intakes of the clients through a one-way screen, and carried out interviews with the clients, parents and therapists after the intake phase. The descriptive notes were analyzed qualitatively and descriptions of the experiences of the therapists, clients and parents who participated in the research, were given. The following themes, on which the experiences of the therapists, parents and clients were described, derived from the descriptive notes: The therapist’s first contact with the client and parents; the expectations of the client and parents; the experience of the preliminary introduction of the procedure which followed during the intake-phase; non-verbal behaviour as an indication of the experiences of the client and therapist; the client’s experience of the selfdisclosure of the therapist; the experience of the client of the way in which the therapist listened to him, and finally the experiences of the therapists, clients and parents, as given during the interview by the researcher. Due to the descriptive nature of the research no generalizations were made.
