Although the struggle for the cultural control of the school is an age old phenomenon, the school. in modern times. is increasingly seen as an important agent of "rising expectations" and hence the object of intensifying criticism. This thesis, therefore, is an attempt at determining the pedagocical permissibility of the implied "cultural control' of the formal school. The cultural relationship between the formal school and respectively, the church, politics and the economy, as exemplified by the Jesuit schools in the Middle Ages, the Nazi schools before the Second World War and the formal state schools in the United States of America after the Second World War, are assessed by means of pedagogic criteria. The outcome of this research is that education in the school, first and foremost, has to take into account, not the needs of society hut the influence these needs have on accomplishing the aim of educative teaching, namely adulthood. As neither the child nor the school is able to exist in isolation of the cultural community of which they are part, the school, as a cultural entity, will not have any justification without some measure of cultural control.
