The developing history of the South African punishing and prison systems, have up till now in broad terms gone through two major movements. Initially punishment was the overriding option for people who have transgressed. The idea of treatment of the transgressors already started in the eighteenth century, but only reached its climax in the sixties and seventies of this century. The second movement, which is presently in process, is where the choice for treatment will depend to a large extent on the prisoner. Another feature of this process is the consideration of alternatives to imprisonment. This research focused on a detail aspect of the broad field in which the social worker in prison is involved. The resumption of the marriage relationship after a period of imprisonment holds more problems than meets the eye. Because of the excitement over the release of the prisoner, the possibility exists that prisoners can ignore or disregard their marital problems and eventually not deal with it. This research confirmed the existence of specific problems with regard to the marriage relationship. If it is not dealt with in proper fashion, the happiness and excitement of the release will soon fade. It can even hold a threat to the the marriage relationship. The period prior to the release is of utmost importance. Many aspects can be dealt with, with positive results for a sound adjustment of the prisoner and his wife after release. Social workers together with the prisoners, should take this golden opportunity.
