spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/69782 Teologie en pluralisme : 'n kritiese analise van David Tracy se voorstel van 'n 'analogiese verbeelding' Conradie, Ernst Theron, P. F. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Theology. Dept. of Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology. Tracy, David, 1939- Pluralism Theology, Doctrinal -- Methodology Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 1992. One copy microfiche. Full text to be digitised and attached to bibliographic record. 1. The concept "plurality" may well be used to describe the contemporary global situation - not only the areas of culture, politics and religion, but also Christian theology itself (section 1.1.1-2). 2. An example of this plurality within Christian theology is the wide variety of views on the nature of theology and the different ways of doing theology. Four dominant models of theology can be identified in which theology is respectively described as an act of faith, a search for sure knowledge, an interpretation event and an event of emancipating praxis(section 1.3). 3. The search for an adequate response to (see an adequate way of doing theology amidst) the existing plurality within Christian theology is an important issue. Five conceptual strategies for such a response to plurality can be identified, i.e. those of monism, eclecticism, relativism, scepticism and pluralism (section 1.1.3). 4. Pluralism (as opposed to monism) involves an appreciation for the legitimacy of plurality and a denial of any harmonisint tendency in which some unity within this plurality is presupposed. Pluralism (as opposed to relativism) also involves a search for usable criteria to critically test any suggested plurality (section 1.2). 5. This study concerns a theological evaluation of such a pluralistic strategy towards the existing plurality within Christian theology (see section 1.4). It concentrates particularly on the merits of David Tracy's contribution in this regard. 6. The hypothesis can be formulated that any particular view on the nature of "theology" (see 2 above) will have a deciding influence on a "theological" evaluation of the legitimacy of plurality and pluralism within Christian "theology" (section 1.5). 7. This is well illustrated with reference to Tracy's view of theology as an event of correlation and interpretation (section 2.3). Tracy's defence of the legitimacy of plurality in theology and the criteria he identifies for theological interpretation are indeed based on his analysis of theology as the interpretation of a classic, a religious classic and, more specifically, the Christian classic (section 2.4-6). 8. Tracy's suggestion of an analogical imagination can also be understood as a) a redescription of the analogical nature of theological interpretation, b) a proposal (via a radicalisation of the role of the imagination) as to bow theology ought to be done in a pluralistic context and c) an existential plea for the necessity of conversation (Tracy's root-metaphor for interpretation) and a search for analogical relat;ons between the existing plurality of theological traditions (see section 2.7). 9. With his hermeneutical analysis of theology Tracy provides one legitimate description of theology - although not the only possible one. This is illustrated with reference to the differences between hermeneutical, orthodox, post-liberal, praxis-orientated and postmodernist views on theology (section 2.8). The legitimacy of a plurality of views on theology besides that of interpretation is defended instead. 10. It is problematic to draw any clear implications of this argument for a theological evaluation of the legitimacy of plurality and pluralism in Christian theology (see section 3.2). In the light of certain problems which are indeed related to a pluralistic strategy in theology (section 3.3), a view of theology as a reflection on the content of love may provide a valuable corrective in the search for an adequate way of doing theology in a pluralistic context (section 3.4).
