The general aim of this thesis was to investigate, within a philosophy of science framework, the possibility of applying the person centered approach developed by Carl Rogers as a method for qualitative research. 1. Research With a view on the general aim the following were investigated: 1.1 The historical roots of the person centered approach as a method of conducting conversation. 1.2 The extent to which the person centered approach exhibits phenomenological characteristics. 1.3 The existential implications of the person centered approach. 1.4 Whether a person who is doing person centered research answers to the requirements of phenomenological qualitative research. 2. Conclusions 2.1 There are strong similarities between the non-directive method of the person centered approach and the Socratic dialogue, so that in a sense it can be tipified in the same way as Socrates’s dialogue is, namely as maieutic. 2.2 The agreement between the person centered approach of Carl Rogers and the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl is such, that the former can be characterized as a phenomenological approach. 2.3 As a phenomenological method of conducting conversation the person centered approach penetrates the ontological grounds of human existence. 2.4 A researcher applying the person centered method of conducting conversation in research is working in a phenomenological reductive way. The general conclusion of this thesis is that the person centered approach can function significantly to facilitate qualitative research.
