A.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1998. As the oldest Afrikaans university in South Africa, Stellenbosch has played a keyrole within the sphere of tertiary education. This study endeavours to research the influence of student culture on the character and personal development of the student. The identity and ethos of the University of Stellenbosch during its formative years from 1918 to 1930 is brought into correlation with the development of student culture. Apparently external influence from outside the university as well as internal factors led to certain manifestations of student culture at the University of Stellenbosch during the specific period. External factors that have been studied are the regions from where the students originated, the spirit of the time, the economy, politics, religion, climatic conditions and topography. The internal factors, for example the academic, hostel-life, manner of student communication, clothing and the religion of the student is finely interwoven with university life and forms not only the student's culture, but is the nucleus of student culture. The exposure of the factors that have influenced student culture, as well as examples of the products of this cultural heritage, has proved the bi-polar tensions between the preservation of the familiar culture on the one hand and the exposure to the universal, and often unknown, on the other hand. The research results of this dissertation exemplify that the necessary tensions between the task that the University of Stellenbosch has had as a national institution, and the responsibility of being a University of international repute, have without doubt been present since the formative days of the university.
